EMS(ISO 14001:2004)

Overview
In the face of growing concern for the need to maintain and improve the quality of the environment along with protecting human health, organizations all over world are growing increasingly concerned with the environmental impact of their activities, product and services. The environmental responsibility of an organization is of crucial importance in today's world. Achieving a sound environmental performance however requires commitment and a systematic approach to environmental management.

The general purpose of this international standard is to provide assistance to organizations in implementing and improving their EMS. It is consistent with the concept of sustainable development and is compatible with diverse culture, social and organizational frameworks.

It should be noted that only ISO-14001 contains requirements that may be objectively audited for the purpose of certification/registration or self declaration.

There are definite economic benefits to be gained from taking the trouble in implementing the environmental management system. These should be clearly identified in order to demonstrate to interested parties (especially shareholders), the value of good Environmental Management. It also provides the organization with the opportunity to link environmental objectives with specific financial outcomes. If the link between a good environmental policy and financial outcome is specified, it ensures that resources are spent with a view of both financial and environmental gain.

Potential benefits associated with an effective EMS include:

  • Assuring customer for commitment to Environmental Management System.

  • Good public and community relationship & satisfaction of investor criterion and improving access to capital,
  • Obtaining insurance at a reasonable cost & enhancing both image and market share,
  • Meeting vendor certification criteria & improving cost control.

  • Reducing incidents that result in liability & conservation of raw materials and energy.
  • Facilitation of the attainment of required consents and authorizations, fostering development and sharing environmental solutions,
  • improving industry-government relationship.
