TPM (Total Productive Maintenance)

The unique concept to Total Productive Maintenance was initiated by JIPM (Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance, Tokyo). It has gained global acceptance in an extremely short period of time due to the user friendliness of its concept. TPM is based on following five concepts:

  • Building up a Profitable Culture
  • Preventive Philosophy
  • All employee participation.
  • Genbagenbetsu i.e. Actual Scene, Actual Things and Realities
  • Employee Convenience

TPM aims at Zero Loss and doubling productivity. In order to achieve this, it makes use of specific techniques such as Autonomous Maintenance (operator maintaining his own machine) and Overlapping organization (dividing the complete organization into small improvement teams).

TPM aims at restructuring the corporate culture through improvement of human resources and plant equipment.

Today, TPM is considered as an essential part of any corporate culture. In this competitive scenario the qualities that TPM supports makes the difference between success and failure. TPM is required because:

  1. The economic environment surrounding a organisation has become severe and the total elimination of waste is required for survival of the organisation.

  2. Quality Control requirements are stringent without the allowance of even one defective piece. Quality assured delivery of total quality is now taken for granted.

  3. Introduction of TPM eliminates losses in equipment, manpower, material and energy.
